History and traditions of massage: from ancient temples to today

Massage is older than writing. Wherever people cared for one another through touch, traditions were born that have reached us almost unchanged. This is a short journey through time.

Ancient China: the energy of qi

Over 4,000 years ago Chinese treatises described pressing techniques along energy meridians. Free flow of qi was believed to be the foundation of health and longevity.

India and Ayurveda

In the Indian tradition, warm-oil massage (abhyanga) was part of daily self-care. Touch was seen as a way to balance body, mind and senses.

Egypt and ancient Greece

Tomb frescoes preserved scenes of massage. In Greece it became part of body culture: athletes and philosophers valued it for recovery and pleasure. Hippocrates wrote of the “art of rubbing.”

Japan and gliding techniques

The Japanese school gave the world point techniques and gliding methods, from which modern nuru massage later grew. More in our nuru article.

Tantra: the sacred touch

In the tantric tradition sensuality was seen as a path to spirituality. This philosophy underlies tantric massage — which we cover separately.
